You could say that this … was a peaceful ascension in a literal sense above a fragmented, polarized, digitized world that is driving us mad.
It was not a literal re-creation of the album but rather a set of compositions that ranged all over the stylistic map yet would “ascend” into a musical universe of its own.
For ages, humans have been inspired by the act of rising, by being lifted off the ground and into flight. With an ensemble of wind instruments and a rhythm section: we follow the lines of celestial pop music, ecstatic Sufi spinning, wild free jazz, gripped complexity, and antiphonal polyphony. As it was for Coltrane, for us, of Ascension is an architecture filled with vibrant noise — one that connects disparate stylistic artforms inside a self-similar sound.
And yet, at this moment, this is the place we stand as a species: trapped in a dopamine reset loop, staring at our phones, looking to the internet to define our community and our individual senses of self. of Ascension is a show about finding ourselves, finding heaven on earth, and searching for the divine in music, in the stars, in order and chaos, and in each other.
